We catch up with Jenny and Graham MacHarg of Fowberry Alpacas Knitwear to find out about their exciting venture.
"We have been utterly enchanted by our alpacas, to the extent that they should be sold with a health warning "Highly Addictive!".
"The fleece that our alpacas produce for us once a year is a unique cross between hair and wool, hence the term 'fibre', when describing it. Alpacas don't need lanolin in their fleeces like sheep do, because they originate in the Andes, an area of low rainfall, therefore their fibre has a silky, soft handle, but still with incomparable insulating qualities. Some of our finest females produce fibre as soft as cashmere".
And all your fleeces are processed organically?
"Yes, that is correct, the fleece is organically processed into yarn in a way that protects the natural lustre and elasticity and the environment".
Jenny and Graham are constantly looking for inspiring designs to make with the yarn, either hand knitted, crocheted or hand woven and find that customers are often captivated by the thought of articles made with the fleece from just one alpaca, with a photo on the label.
