    Latest News:

Art and architecture fuse in a new exhibition by Northumberland artist Michelle Milburn.

'Inspired by Design' is fuelled by a passion for Gothic architecture, and in particular that of AWN Pugin.

Michelle has spent the past few months studying the interior of St Mary’s Cathedral to produce a series of atmospheric pieces, based around Pugin’s architecture and design.

"milburn (2).jpgI have a real affinity with Pugins work, producing this exhibition has led me to delve deeper into his character and the legacy which he has left us"   Michelle says. "Pugin’s designs are all around us, he had such a profound impact architectural styles, such as arts and crafts, which becomes apparent as you follow his career. I have been very privileged to have access to some of Pugins buildings in the North East; the result is to be a series of exhibitions in venues around the country based on his work and those who were inspired by him".

Working from her remote studio in Northumberland, Michelle uses vibrant acrylic inks and paint on bespoke hand stretched canvas to create her interpretations of the spaces she studies.

"I spend a lot of time in and around buildings getting to know all the moods and facets of its character, whilst all the time producing sketches and taking reference photographs which I work from back in the studio. Once back at the drawing board anything from fine nibbed dip pens to decorators rollers are employed, it’s a very exciting process, you never know exactly how its going to turn out, that’s what keeps me coming back and keeps me motivated".

'Inspired by Design' can be seen at St Mary’s Cathedral, Cloister Café until the first week of November during normal opening hours.

Further work can be seen on Michelles website at www.michellemilburn.co.uk and a series of prints are available through the Aurora Shop.

Michelle has several other large exhibitions planned for 2008-2009, details will be posted on her website as they become available.
