    Mike McFarlane Wins National Award

Landscape Photographer, Mike McFarlane, based in County Durham has won a national award for his photography.

The Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition sponsored by LowePro, the AA and the Sunday Times has awarded Mike Mike_McFarlane_press_release_27-09-07_2.jpgthe LowePro Environment Award.Mike continually strives to promote the protection of our fragile open spaces, using his stunning images, so it is fitting that that he has won the Environment award in this competition - which was designed to be given to a photograph 'reflecting the beauty of our precious natural environment'.

The Final judging panel: Bill Bryson, best-selling Writer and CPRE's President-designate; Charlie Waite, Landscape photographer; Ben Fogle, TV Presenter and Writer; Janet Ibbotson, Managing Director of the Association of Photographers; Keith Wilson, Founder and Editor of Outdoor Photography magazine; John Langley, Manager of the National Theatre; Monica Allende, The Sunday Times Magazine Picture Editor; Liz Allen, AA Publishing; had to select from over 21,000 images.

Kerry Banner, head of PR for Lowepro said, "Just looking at the incredible standard of the entries - it's clear that there are many talented photographers out there who appreciate our inspiring landscape.Lowepro has always had a strong heritage of supporting conservation and environmental projects and we chose Mike's image because we felt it captured perfectly the precious, pristine landscape we should all strive to protect.  It also demonstrates Mike's hard work and dedication to landscape photography - great images like this take a lot of commitment as well as technical skill.  We can't all be perfect all of the time, but even if it's just switching off lights and recycling regularly we can all do our bit - it's not to late.  We wish Mike the very best with his future work - and hopefully by raising the profile of such excellent photography, it will help encourage everyone to help protect and preserve our environment".

As well as photography equipment from Lowepro, Manfrotto and B+W, Mike wins the chance to see his photograph published in the first Take a view book, published by the AA. His work will also be on view at a six-week exhibition to be held at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank from 15 September until 3 November 2007. Mike who has completed commissions for The Centre for Life in Newcastle and regional development agency One NorthEast, displays his work in a number of galleries locally including the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle and the Courtyard Gallery in Appleby.  He will be taking part in the Christmas Art Tour at the Hearth at Horsley over the weekend of 30 November to 2 December and next year has an increasingly busy schedule of engagements including exhibitions at Cornucopia in Hexham in June, Pebbles in Allendale during September, and the Queen's Hall in Hexham also in September.
