Clay Ceramics
Lorraine Clay
Leading on from an obsession with pottery since 1992, Clay Ceramics was set up in 2002 to produce original handmade ceramics.
A love of artefacts – manmade and natural, can be detected in most of my work, from weathered bones to obscured church carving.
I use many ceramic techniques, particularly throwing, to make both functional and non-functional items.
Current work includes stoneware tableware, using glazes which I have developed.
On the purely artistic side, work includes “promise boxes” inspired by Mesopotamian cuneiform envelopes and Roman inspired vases. I have also been practising with Roman techniques to produce embossed bowls, and Medieval tile making techniques.
I run evening classes and workshops from the Hearth at Horsley where I have a permanent studio. I also visit schools and groups from one hour tasters to National Curriculum units.
I also teach for the NHS Mental Health Trust in Ashington.
I commenced the Ceramics Degree at Newcastle College in 2006, which is sure to bring about exciting changes in the years to come! |
