How to sign up for a PayPal Business Account

For those of you who are not sure which PayPal account to sign up for (as there is quite a choice!) here’s a quick guide:

  1. Go to http://www.paypal.co.uk .
  2. Click “Sign up Now”.
  3. Select “Business Account” then click “Continue”. You MUST have a business (or premium) account to be able to participate in the online shop. If you don’t have an account at all then go for the Business one.
  4. Fill in your personal information and then click “Continue”.
  5. Create user name and password, and choose your security questions, then click “Sign Up”.
  6. Go to your email account, check your email, there should be one from PayPal asking you to confirm setup. If you can’t see the mail then check your junk mail filters. Follow the link in the email to confirm your account and enter your password on the PayPal page when it appears.
  7. Complete the “Optional Business Information” Page, then click “Continue”.
  8. You now have a PayPal Business Account!

Still a couple of things left to do though. You need to give PayPal details of your bank account, and then you need to get the account verified.

  1. If you haven’t already done so, then log back in to your PayPal account (go to http://www.paypal.co.uk and click “Log in”).
  2. Click the link that says “UK Unverified”.
  3. Click “Add Bank Account”.
  4. Fill in your bank account details then click “Continue”.
  5. Review the details you entered then click “Add Bank Account”
  6. PayPal will confirm that you have successfully added a bank account
  7. Next, follow the walk through from PayPal to get your account verified

Once you have your account set up log in to the Aurora site at http://www.theauroraproject.org.uk/members and choose the link to edit your log in details. In here there is a text field where you can fill in your PayPal user name. We don’t need your password – that stays with you and no-one else, in fact don’t even tell PayPal what it is. Once you have filled in your PayPal user name in your Aurora page then that’s you set up to receive money from the site when it goes live.

What’s account verification then? PayPal explain it like this:

To lift your sending and withdrawal limits and get the most of your PayPal account, you need to complete a few more steps to get Verified.

When you sign up for a PayPal account, we only ask for the essential information so that you can get started as quickly as possible. To allow us to do this, all PayPal accounts are initially Unverified and have limits. We do this because PayPal is legally required to verify more information about our customers to lift these limits.

What is Verification?

For Sending Payments. If you are an online buyer, you’ll need a way to put money into your PayPal account.

To do this, you can either link your bank account, debit card or credit card to your PayPal account. When you provide PayPal with your card or funding details, we require that you prove you are the owner of that account or card. We call this getting Verified. It’s our way of preventing fraud such as identity theft.

Getting Verified protects you and everyone that uses the PayPal network. Once you’re Verified, your account no longer has sending limits.

For Receiving Payments. Whether you sell occasionally, or sell a lot with your online business, you’ll need a way to withdraw money from your PayPal account. You can enable withdrawals by linking either your bank account or debit card to your PayPal account.

For security reasons, PayPal has set initial limits on the amount of money you can withdraw. To lift these limits, we require that you get Verified. In some countries there are additional steps to confirm your identity and lift withdrawal limits.

Why Get Verified?

  • Send as many PayPal payments as your like. Your sending limits are lifted
  • Easily withdraw money from your PayPal account to your bank account
  • Fund your PayPal payments directly with your bank account or debit card
  • Qualify for Buyer and Seller Protection at no additional costBuyer and Seller Protection at no additional cost

How do I Get Verified?

Set Up Bank Funding: add and confirm a bank account

  • Click Add Bank Account on the left side of your Account Overview page
  • Confirm your bank account by entering the two deposit amounts that PayPal sent you when you added a bank account

Definitely worth doing as it inspires confidence in your buyers and gives you the peace of mind knowing that you have no limits to how much you can transfer into your bank account.

Good luck everyone!
