Domain names – get your own
Some of you may remember me talking about getting your own domain name. This should cost you less than a tenner for two years and is an extremely worthwhile investment.
There are many different domain name companies who can reserve your name for you. If you don’t know of one then try http://www.lcn.com who offer .co.uk domain names for £8.81 with free web forwarding.
The idea is that you purchase your domain name, and once you have received confirmation of registration from the supplier you then log in to their control panel and set up domain name forwarding. This means that your domain name can be made to forward to any web address of your choice. For example, you can make your www.mydomainname.co.uk address display your Aurora site at www.theauroraproject.org.uk/mysite. This gives visitors to your domain the impression that you have your own site.
Don’t forget to set up email forwarding too, you can forward mail from <anything>@mydomain.co.uk to your existing email address. Domain names are portable – so if you change broadband suppliers and therefore get a new email address you can change the forwarding of your domain name to point to this new address.
